It is Simple … but Not Easy

Happy New Year!
New Year’s has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make. We resolve to follow through on those changes. Simple and easy - Right? Not!
Have you made resolutions for this year? What are they?
Here a dozen of the most common resolutions … Are yours amongst these?
- Spend More Time with Family & Friends
- Fit in Fitness
- Tame the Bulge
- Quit the Bad Habit, e.g., smoking, not drinking enough water
- Enjoy Life More
- Become Financially Free
- Learn Something New
- Help Others
- Get Organized
- Get a Better Job
- Reduce Stress Overall
- Take a Trip
At the same time we make these resolutions, we listen to many solutions of how to do it. There are many known recipes for success. For example to attain and maintain your perfect weight we need to “eat less and move more.” That is about as simple as can be! Do we follow through? Nope.
Unfortunately we often find that we do not follow through. We find that a year later we are still not implementing the resolutions we previously made. It sounds easy but we do not or are not able to follow through. Why not? Well despite the fact that it may be SIMPLE, in fact it is NOT EASY.
One of the key points made over and over in The SGR Home Study Course is that it is more important to do things in a certain way than to do certain things.
First you must think in a certain way. In short, we are out thoughts! If we do not think our desires, we will not achieve our desires. Simple, but not easy! It is paramount to form a clear and definite mental picture of what we want. “Many people fail to impress on the thinking substance their mental picture because they have themselves only a vague and misty concept of the things they want to become, to do, or to have. You must know what you want and be definite enough to form a clear coherent sentence about what you want. Unless you do, you will never achieve what you want with unformed longings and vague desires.” (Chapter 8 of The SGR Home Study Course).
Second we must have discipline or will power. We as human beings are the only creatures that have been endowed with the higher faculties of Perception, Reason, Will, Memory, Imagination, and Intuition. No other form of life has been given these creative faculties. Of these faculties, The SGR Home Study Course focuses only on the Will and in fact two chapters (8 & 9) are dedicated to the faculty of the Will!
The “Will” is the intellectual factor that gives one the ability to hold one image on the screen of their mind. Using the will enables each of us to hold that vision with faith and purpose. When we use our Will to hold an image in our consciousness, we are at that time rejecting any and all mental distractions. The Will is for those whose wants are strong enough to overcome mental laziness and the love of ease. The more clear our picture and the more we dwell upon it, the stronger our desire becomes. Adversity is common and will slow us down, but it is overcome with our strong will.
There are times in my life that I have successfully made the changes I desired. When I have succeeded the changes become second nature and now it does do not take much effort to maintain them. In each case it required me to have the will to have the discipline to overcome the difficult times.
Where have I succeeded in having the will power to do what I wanted in my life?
- Making and mailing my holiday cards despite lots of holiday pressures and extras in my calendar. Making holiday cards are a tradition for me. I have made my cards every year since 1973!
- Studying some portion of The SGR Home Study Course every day. I often find myself hearing or reading the content with a fresh eye based on my experiences that day!
- Following with unwavering discipline the details of my stock and option trading. 2007 was a winning year as a result!
- Expressing my gratitude in multiple ways, multiple times a day.
Where have I not succeeded in having the will power necessary to do in my life?
- Sticking to an (any) exercise plan and routine. In fact I was challenged to do one, just one, jumping jack a day as I get out of bed, then build to 2 jumping jacks, etc. I could not even do one on a regular basis!
- Staying on top of my emails.
- Keeping my office clean and straight.
Some people get so caught up in the knowing how to do, but do not spend effort in action. An ounce of doing things is worth a pound of theorizing or studying. Use your will power on yourself to achieve what you want. Use your mind to form a clear mental image of what you want and to hold that vision with faith and purpose. Your will power to keep your mind working the right way.
When I create or design something new for my future, I have found it is VERY important to hold a picture of what I am seeking to achieve. Why, because I KNOW that there will be ups and downs. Intellectually we know this, yet when the difficult periods arrive we behave as though it should not be that way and we tend to lose momentum. Here are some tips I use for staying the course:
- Establish a very clear mental picture of what I want.
- Maintain that clarity of purpose by knowing the why I want to accomplish the goal or intended outcome.
- Create an environment that consistently reminds me of my original purpose.
- Learn to hear and manage the ‘little voice’ in my head.
- Chart my progress and have my chart on display.
- Using The SGR Club membership to keep me on track.
How to make this happen?
- Make the decision to change.
- Identify YOUR (not anyone else’s) reasons to change and write them down.
- Focus on your future vision.
- Dream of what you would like to achieve.
- Transform five of those dreams into goals by giving them a deadline, a way to measure them, and writing them down.
- Read what you have written first thing in the morning and again at night each and every day.
- Work with an attitude of gratitude and acknowledge what you are doing is Working.
It is simple, but it is not easy. Use one of your faculties and develop the will to overcome the upcoming adversities and make a difference. I have come to rely on my SGR Club membership to make this happen for me.
